The Mobile Equestrian

I can't imagine life without my iPhone. As ridiculous as that might sound to non-tech savvy people, I'm certain that it is my favorite thing I own. I can do absolutely anything with it; find a restaurant, capture and edit a video, post to facebook, update my netflix que and tons and tons of other things.

The best part about having an iPhone (or any app capable phone) is the recent increase in horse related apps. From dressage tests to Stallion Registers, the equestrian world is now at your finger tips.

The Modern Riding Boot

Way back in 2008, equestrians got a peek at the Nike Ippeas. However, I'm pretty sure no one (in the US at least) wears them, owns them, or has even seen them in person (Practical Horseman wrote that the boots were only available to Olympic Athletes). While some people thought they were a little strange, I was in love with the zipper that went across the front of the boot and the idea of the screw in spur. Imagine having spurs like you have drill heads, all shapes, sizes, and without the hassle of leather straps.

Alas, I've pretty much given up on any hope of seeing a pair of Nike Ippeas for sale at my local tack shop.

However, while browsing Equestrian Collections yesterday, I saw this ad in my upper right corner for the new Ariat Volant. The resemblance to the Nike Ippeas is relatively similar; across the front zipper, with contrasting red and black coloring.

I have to admit I'm not a fan of the Ariat Volant, and usually I love Ariat's products. I am especially not a fan of the $499 price tag for a boot I won't be able to show in. The bottom detail has this sort of Spiderman look, which makes it look more like a glorified climbing boot than a sleek riding boot.

There are some pros to this boot. I do like the red liner on the inside and the contrasting zipper and I especially like the spur cradle which offers two heights, but I just can't get past the price for a lesson boot.

Fenwick Farms Bamboo Saddle Pad

From the Fenwick Farms website:
"a lightweight, universal saddle pad combining an eco-friendly Bamboo fabric with luxuriously soft, high performance EquSuede. The combination of the fabrics prevent the saddle from slipping without the use of irritating billet straps and helps keep your horse's back drier. Also, horse hair does not stick to the Bamboo fabric. All disciplines can enjoy this pad. Many people who have tested this pad have found they do not need a half pad with it. That is your choice. Our unique back design adapts extremely well to high withered horses."

The Helmet Smart Equestrian

Warning! Do not believe the rumor that you can put your helmet in the dishwasher!

From the Troxel helmet website:

"The heat and forces inside a dishwasher are too intense. While your helmet may look brand new when it comes out of the dishwasher, it may no longer protect your head in the event of a fall. Even the heat inside the trunk of your car is dangerous for the integrity of your helmet.

Trunk temperatures can exceed 160 degrees and that damages the helmet’s materials. The best way to preserve the helmet’s quality is to keep it out of the sun when not in use and store the helmet in a tote or carrying bag that allows drying while being stored."

Recommended cleaning tips from Troxel:

"Many ASTM-SEI helmets, especially those designed for schooling rides, have removable liners. Wash and soak the liner in mild, soapy water, adding 4-6 drops of bleach and then rinse it in a dilute alcohol and water solution. Then allow the liner to air dry completely. The drying is important and warns that it’ll only make matters worse if you put a not-quite-dry liner back into your helmet.

Methods for cleaning the outside of safety helmets depend on the exterior materials. Plastic schooling helmets can be wiped down with a soft towel and some soapy water. Allow it then to air dry. Then you can restore luster and shine with an application of a light wax protector like Pledge. Micro fiber helmets, such as the newer Euro-styled helmets, can actually withstand the same mild soap and water treatment. Make sure you also rinse them well with clean water to remove all soapy residue. Again, air-dry the helmet in the shade."

The best advice I've ever gotten about caring for my skin is to always take my make-up off before bed and to always wear sunscreen.

Every single day I wake up and put on sunscreen, even if I know that I will be inside all day or if it's pouring rain and the sun is nowhere to be seen. Not only does sunscreen protect against skin cancer ("the most commonly diagnosed cancer with its combined incidence surpassing lung, breasts, colorectal, and prostate cancer") , but it helps prevent wrinkles. "Research shows 90% of wrinkles are caused by the sun’s UVA light and damage from sun is the number one cause of premature aging in women and men." Additionally "when worn daily, sunscreens help to minimize the harmful effects of UVB and UVA on DNA. They also help shield important proteins like collagen, elastin, and keratin, which keep skin smooth and firm."

Since spring is here and summer is right around the corner, now is the time to jump on the sunscreen bandwagon.

Here are some eco-friendly sunscreens you should make sure are always in your barn bag:
